In 1843, in answer to Sir Henry Pottinger's application for instructions, Lord Aberdeen replied that Macao was to be considered Chinese territory. I have never seen this despatch.
In 1845 the High Commissioner Kiying accorded Macao some additional commercial privileges, but in 1848, Senhor Amaral, a Portuguese officer, who had lost an arm when serving, I believe, in our navy, being encouraged by the belief that the Canton City question would produce a rupture between England & China was expelled.
